If you have searched "organic formula with probiotics" recently, you have probably landed on a list that includes HiPP, Kendamil, Holle, and Jovie , often with very little explanation of what actually differs between them. The word "probiotics" appears on packaging and in marketing copy in ways that are technically accurate but practically meaningless without context.

This guide is different. We pulled the actual ingredient lists for every major organic formula and compared them across the criteria that matter most for gut health: whether they use whole milk or skimmed, whether they contain GOS prebiotics, whether any probiotic strain is named and validated, whether they contain palm oil, and whether they are EU certified. No brand deals. No sponsored positions. Here is what we found.

First: prebiotic vs probiotic , they are not the same thing

This distinction matters because formula brands use both terms constantly, often in ways that blur the difference. Before looking at any formula, you need to know what you are actually looking for.

Prebiotic vs probiotic

Prebiotic
GOS

Food for the good bacteria already living in your baby's gut. GOS (galacto-oligosaccharides) feeds Bifidobacterium , the dominant beneficial bacteria in a healthy infant gut , and helps it grow and multiply.

Probiotic
Live bacteria

Live bacteria added directly to the formula. Examples: Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 in HiPP Dutch. The goal is to deliver new beneficial bacteria into the gut alongside the feed.

The fertiliser and seeds analogy: prebiotics are the fertiliser , they feed and grow what is already there. Probiotics are the seeds , they deliver new bacteria. Your baby's gut benefits from both, but they work differently. A formula can have one, both, or neither.

One more thing before the table: GOS only exists in organic formula , not FOS. We checked every formula below and found GOS in several. FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides) , which you will read about extensively online , does not appear in any of the organic formulas we reviewed. It appears in Kendamil Classic, their non-organic range. In the organic market, GOS is the only prebiotic you will find. For the full science on why GOS outperforms FOS, see our detailed guide on GOS and FOS in baby formula.

The five criteria that actually matter

Here is what each column in the table below means and why it matters:

Whole milk , formula made from whole milk retains the natural fat profile of milk, including fat-soluble vitamins and bioactive lipids. Formulas made from skimmed milk have the fat stripped out and replaced with vegetable oils. Whole milk is closer to what nature intended.

GOS (prebiotic) , galacto-oligosaccharides derived from lactose. The prebiotic with the strongest clinical evidence for raising Bifidobacterium to breastfed infant levels. Clinical trials have also shown GOS reduces constipation and softens stools in formula-fed infants, producing a stool consistency closer to that of breastfed babies. It will appear on the label as "galacto-oligosaccharides" or "galacto-oligosaccharides from lactose." If you see that, it is present. The dose is not typically listed separately.

Probiotic strain , a named, validated live bacterial strain added to the formula. "Added probiotic cultures" without a strain name tells you nothing. A named strain like Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 has clinical trial evidence behind it. Unnamed strains do not.

No palm oil , palm oil is the most common fat in infant formula. Research suggests it can bind with calcium in the gut, forming insoluble soaps that harden stools and reduce calcium absorption. EU regulations permit it; the better formulas avoid it.

EU certified , EU Regulation 2016/127 sets significantly stricter standards for infant formula than the FDA. It prohibits corn syrup solids in Stage 1, restricts certain additives, and requires higher nutritional minimums. USDA organic certification does not meet the same standard.

What we found that surprised us

FOS does not exist in organic formula

You will read extensively online about GOS and FOS as the gold standard prebiotic combination , often cited as a 9:1 ratio. We reviewed 12 organic formulas and found GOS in several. FOS appeared in none. It exists in Kendamil Classic, their non-organic range, but not in any organic formula we reviewed. If you are buying organic, GOS is the only prebiotic you will find. The good news: GOS is the more effective of the two anyway.

Within HiPP, PRE is better than Stage 1

HiPP German Stage 1 contains organic starch as a carbohydrate source. HiPP German PRE does not , it uses lactose only. Both contain the same probiotic strain. From a gut health perspective, PRE is the better choice if you are going with HiPP German. HiPP Dutch Stage 1 does not contain starch and is the stronger of the two HiPP cow milk options. The same pattern holds for Holle goat milk: Holle Goat PRE uses lactose only and is Demeter certified, while Holle Goat Stage 1 contains maltodextrin. If you are choosing Holle goat milk, PRE is the better formula.

Holle's cleanest label is not their best gut health formula

Holle Bio PRE has the most minimal ingredient list of any formula we reviewed , Demeter certified, whole milk, no additives beyond the regulatory minimum. But it contains no GOS and no probiotic. The cleanest label is not always the most gut-supportive. Holle Bio PRE is an excellent choice if you prioritise simplicity and the highest organic certification available. It is not the choice if gut microbiome support is your primary goal.

A note on palm oil

Palm oil appears in HiPP Dutch, HiPP German PRE, HiPP German Stage 1, HiPP Dutch Goat, Holle Bio PRE, and Holle Bio Stage 1. Research suggests palm oil can bind with calcium in the infant gut, forming insoluble soaps that harden stools and reduce calcium absorption. The formulas without palm oil , Jovie Goat, Kendamil Organic, Kendamil Goat, Holle Goat Stage 1, and Nara Organics , use sunflower, rapeseed, and coconut oils instead.

The only formula with a named probiotic strain

Of all the formulas we reviewed, only three contain a named probiotic strain , and all three are HiPP variants. HiPP Dutch Stage 1 uses Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 (also marketed as Hereditum), which has clinical evidence for reducing respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in infants. HiPP German PRE and Stage 1 use Lactobacillus fermentum Hereditum , the same strain, registered under a slightly different designation.

No other formula in our review contains a named, validated probiotic strain. Jovie Goat, Kendamil Organic, Holle, and Nara do not include live bacterial cultures at all. If a named probiotic strain is your primary requirement, HiPP Dutch Stage 1 is currently the only palm-oil-free option , though it does use skimmed milk rather than whole milk.

What the research shows on L. fermentum CECT5716

Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 has been studied specifically in infants. Clinical trials have shown reduced incidence of gastrointestinal and respiratory infections in the first year of life compared to formula without the strain. It is one of the better-evidenced probiotic strains in infant nutrition , which is why HiPP's use of it is genuinely meaningful, not just a marketing label.

Want whole milk + GOS + a named probiotic? Add drops.

No palm-oil-free, whole milk formula currently includes a named probiotic strain. But there is a practical solution: choose Jovie Goat, Kendamil Organic, or Holle Goat PRE for the formula, and add organic probiotic drops separately. This gives you the best of both worlds , a clean whole milk base with no palm oil, plus a clinically validated probiotic strain at a known dose. Jovie and Kendamil also add GOS, making them the stronger gut health combination.

Garden of Life Baby Probiotic , USDA organic, 7 strains including L. rhamnosus GG (the most studied strain for infant colic) and B. infantis Bi-26 (critical for early microbiome establishment). 4 billion CFU, no sweeteners.

MaryRuth Organics Infant Probiotic Drops , USDA organic, Clean Label Project certified, B Corp. 5 strains including B. infantis and L. reuteri. 100 million CFU. For daily gut support from 6 months.

MaryRuth Organics Precision Colic Drops , specifically for colic. Contains P. pentosaceus KABP-041 and B. longum KABP-042 , clinically studied for reducing crying and fussiness in colicky infants. 1 billion CFU, suitable from newborn, glass bottle, organic sunflower oil only.

Goat milk naturally contains some oligosaccharides

Raw goat milk naturally contains oligosaccharides , not the 200+ complex structures found in human breast milk, but more than cow milk. These survive pasteurisation partially and act as mild prebiotics. Formulas made from whole goat milk , Jovie Goat, HiPP Dutch Goat, Holle Goat, Kendamil Goat , benefit from this natural prebiotic base on top of any added GOS. It is not equivalent to GOS supplementation, but it is not nothing either.

The fat in goat milk is also structurally different , smaller fat globules, higher levels of medium-chain fatty acids, and a softer curd formation in the stomach. For a full breakdown of why this matters for eczema and gut inflammation, see our guide on goat milk formula and baby eczema.

What about whole milk vs skimmed?

Most parents focus on prebiotics and probiotics and overlook the milk base entirely. But whether a formula uses whole milk or skimmed milk is one of the most meaningful differences between products.

Skimmed milk formulas , HiPP Dutch, HiPP German, Holle Bio Stage 1, Holle A2 , have the fat removed and then partially replaced with vegetable oils. The fat profile of the final formula is therefore determined by whichever oils the manufacturer chooses, not by the original milk. Whole milk formulas , Jovie Goat, Kendamil Organic, Kendamil Goat, HiPP Dutch Goat, Holle Bio PRE, Holle Goat, Nara Organics , retain the natural fat composition of the milk, including fat-soluble vitamins and bioactive lipids that are structurally more similar to what is in breast milk.

Whole milk also retains MFGM (Milk Fat Globule Membrane) , a bioactive membrane that surrounds fat globules in milk. MFGM contains phospholipids, sphingomyelin, and proteins with clinical evidence for supporting neurological development and immune function in infants. Skimming the milk removes MFGM entirely. No vegetable oil blend can replicate it.

The Kendamil difference worth noting

Kendamil Organic is the only formula in our review that contains nucleotides , cytidine-5'-monophosphate, uridine-5'-monophosphate, adenosine-5'-monophosphate, inosine-5'-monophosphate, and guanosine-5'-monophosphate. Nucleotides are found naturally in breast milk and support immune cell development and gut maturation. No other formula in this comparison includes them.

Our honest take

There is no single perfect formula. Every option involves trade-offs. Here is how we think about the decision:

If whole milk + GOS + no palm oil is your priority: Jovie Goat and Kendamil Organic are the strongest choices. Both are EU certified, use whole milk, contain GOS, and avoid palm oil. Jovie uses whole goat milk with its natural oligosaccharide advantage. Kendamil uses whole cow milk with added nucleotides.

If a named probiotic strain matters most to you: HiPP Dutch Stage 1 is currently the only option with a clinically validated strain (L. fermentum CECT5716) that also has GOS. The trade-off is skimmed milk and palm oil. If you want a named probiotic without palm oil, no formula currently on this list delivers that combination.

If the highest organic certification is your priority: Holle Bio PRE is Demeter certified , the gold standard of regenerative farming and stricter than EU organic. Demeter requires soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare standards that go far beyond what organic certification mandates. It uses whole milk and lactose only. No GOS, no probiotic, but if where your baby's milk comes from matters as much as what is in it, nothing beats it. Demeter also prohibits the use of synthetic hormones and antibiotics entirely , something that even EU organic certification does not mandate at the same level.

If you want goat milk and EU certification: Jovie Goat is the strongest option , whole goat milk, GOS, no palm oil, EU certified. HiPP Dutch Goat has whole goat milk and GOS but contains palm oil.

The short version

Look for GOS on the label , it is the prebiotic with the real clinical evidence. Check whether the milk base is whole or skimmed. If a probiotic is listed, check whether the strain is named. "Added probiotic cultures" without a strain name is not a meaningful claim. And check the fat sources , palm oil is in more formulas than most parents realise.

Of all the formulas we reviewed, only Jovie Goat and Kendamil Organic have whole milk + GOS + no palm oil + EU certification together. That is a short list for a reason.

"Every formula we recommend uses lactose as the sole carbohydrate and whole milk as the base."
