Kendamil Organic uses fresh whole milk delivered daily from British organic family farms. It adds all five nucleotides found in breast milk, contains naturally occurring MFGM and HMOs, and has never used palm oil. It is the UK's number one organic baby formula and scores 10/10 on our ingredient criteria.
Kendamil is a family-run business based in Kendal in the British Lake District. With over 60 years of expertise in infant formula, it is independently owned and manufactures its formula in its own facility, not as a division of a multinational food corporation. The Head of Research and Development has been working in Kendal researching baby formula for over 43 years and personally oversees every recipe.
Every new Kendamil recipe starts with a single question: what would we craft if we did not have to compromise? The answer is visible in the ingredient list. Fresh whole milk rather than reconstituted powder. Algae DHA rather than fish oil. No palm oil, no artificial additives, no cheaper substitutes. Kendamil's promise is high quality ingredients at a fair price, and they state explicitly that they have never chosen cheaper ingredients to benefit their bottom line.
Kendamil Organic is the UK's number one organic baby formula range. All milk comes from British organic family farms. The range holds both EU Organic certification and Soil Association certification, the UK's leading organic standard, which requires stricter farming practices than EU organic alone.
Most parents have never thought about how formula is made. Kendamil's process is worth understanding because it directly explains why the ingredient profile looks the way it does.
The mild heat pasteurisation step in stage two is significant. High heat destroys MFGM, the milk fat globule membrane linked to brain development. Most formula manufacturers use spray-dried powdered milk ingredients that have already been processed at high temperatures before they arrive at the factory. Kendamil starts with fresh liquid whole milk and applies the minimum heat required for safety. This is the manufacturing reason why Kendamil can claim naturally occurring MFGM, because the process preserves what high-heat processing destroys.
Kendamil Organic uses fresh whole milk as its primary ingredient. Most formulas use skimmed milk powder and add vegetable oils to replace the fat. The difference is significant for three reasons.
Milk Fat Globule Membrane is a biological structure naturally present in whole milk fat. It is found in breast milk and is linked to brain development, cognitive function, and immune support. When milk is skimmed and vegetable oils are added to replace the fat, MFGM is lost entirely. Kendamil retains MFGM naturally because it starts with whole milk rather than reconstructing fat from vegetable oil blends.
Palm oil is added to many formulas to mimic the palmitic acid content of breast milk. Whole milk naturally contains palmitic acid in the correct sn-2 molecular position, meaning no palm oil needs to be added separately. This avoids the calcium and fat absorption reduction documented in multiple clinical trials. See our seed oils article for the full evidence.
Foam inhibitors and emulsifiers in many formulas are derived from palm oil. By removing palm oil from the recipe entirely, Kendamil also removes the need for these processing aids. The absence of palm oil cascades through the entire formulation, resulting in a cleaner ingredient list with fewer processing agents.
Parents sometimes ask why Kendamil Organic contains both whole milk and skimmed milk. The answer is a manufacturing reason, not a cost-cutting measure. During the spray drying process, skimmed milk proteins are used to encapsulate minerals to ensure they are evenly dispersed throughout the formula powder. The skimmed milk is not replacing the whole milk fat; it is performing a specific function in mineral delivery. All milk used, including the skimmed component, comes from the same British organic family farms as the whole milk. The fat in Kendamil Organic comes from whole milk, not from vegetable oil substitutes.
Parents switching to Kendamil for the first time sometimes notice that the prepared formula appears slightly foamy. This is a direct result of the whole milk fat base. Kendamil does not use the foam inhibitors and emulsifiers that prevent this in other formulas because those processing aids are palm-derived, and Kendamil does not use palm oil. The foam is harmless and rises to the top of the bottle during feeding. You can also wait briefly for it to settle before feeding. Prepare feeds and use within two hours.
Breast milk has a 60% whey to 40% casein protein ratio in early feeding. Both cow and goat milk are naturally higher in casein than breast milk. Kendamil adds demineralised whey protein concentrate to bring the ratio back to 60:40, matching breast milk's protein composition for Stage 1 infants. The ratio shifts gradually across stages: 60:40 in Stage 1 and 2, then 20:80 in Stage 3, reflecting the natural change in breast milk composition as babies approach weaning. This is a deliberate nutritional decision, not a cost consideration, and it is one of the reasons Kendamil specifically uses demineralised whey rather than whole whey, which would raise the mineral content too high for infant kidneys.

Scoring methodology: Organic certification and whole milk base are each worth 2 points. All other columns are worth 1 point each. Maximum score is 10. Scores reflect our editorial ingredient criteria only and are not a safety assessment. All formulas meet regulatory standards in their country of sale.
Organic whole milk is the first ingredient, sourced fresh daily from British organic family farms certified by the Soil Association. Fresh liquid whole milk rather than reconstituted powdered ingredients. This is the foundation of everything distinctive about Kendamil Organic.
Organic sunflower, coconut, and rapeseed only. No palm oil. No soybean oil. All oils are EU organic certified meaning cold-pressed processing without hexane. Coconut oil provides medium-chain fatty acids easily absorbed by infants. The whole milk fat does the heavy lifting so less vegetable oil is needed overall.
DHA from Schizochytrium sp. microalgae, ARA from Mortierella alpina. No fish oil, no hexane extraction, fully vegetarian and Halal certified. Kendamil states this also results in better tasting formula since fish oil can give formula a slightly fishy smell and taste that some babies reject.
Iron pyrophosphate rather than ferrous sulfate. All Kendamil Stage 1 formulas contain at least 1 mg of iron per 100 kcal, meeting FDA requirements without the need for labelling "additional iron may be necessary." Iron pyrophosphate is gentler on the gut and better tolerated by sensitive babies than ferrous sulfate used in many other formulas.
Organic galacto-oligosaccharides derived from milk, not from chicory root or other synthetic sources. GOS from milk behaves differently from FOS and more closely resembles the prebiotic oligosaccharides found in breast milk. Supports the development of a healthy gut microbiome.
Kendamil's whole milk base contains naturally occurring Human Milk Oligosaccharides, specifically 3'-GL, 4'-GL and 6'-GL. HMOs are a major component of breast milk that support infant immunity. Most formulas do not contain them at all. Kendamil's naturally occurring HMOs come from the whole milk base rather than being synthetically added.
Kendamil does not add probiotics to its formula. The reason is scientific: probiotics cannot survive above 45 degrees Celsius and formula should be prepared with boiled water at 70 degrees. Adding probiotics to formula that will be destroyed during preparation is not a meaningful nutritional decision. Kendamil sells Pro-Comfort Baby Drops separately as a probiotic supplement that can be given alongside formula without heat degradation.
Kendamil Organic contains organic skimmed milk alongside whole milk. As explained above, this performs a mineral encapsulation function during spray drying, not a fat replacement role. Folic acid rather than methylfolate is present, which is standard across EU infant formula regulations. Both are worth knowing but neither affects the 10/10 score on our criteria.
Breast milk naturally contains five nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA and RNA, in every feed. They support immune function, gut development, and the growth of beneficial bacteria in the infant microbiome. During formula manufacturing, high-heat processing destroys the nucleotides present in fresh milk. Most brands never add them back. Kendamil adds all five, explicitly listed by name on the ingredient label.
This is genuinely rare. Of all the formulas we have reviewed, very few include nucleotides at all. If you are comparing formula labels and cannot find nucleotides listed, the formula does not contain them.
For a full explanation of nucleotides in formula and why they matter, see the nucleotides section in our full Kendamil review.
Two comparisons parents searching Kendamil frequently make.
If Demeter biodynamic farming and minimal ingredients are your priority, Holle. If nucleotides, GOS prebiotics, gentler iron, and vegetarian certification matter to you, Kendamil Organic edges ahead on those specific criteria.
On ingredient quality Kendamil wins clearly on MFGM, nucleotides, iron form, and processing standards. On US shelf availability Bobbie wins. The decision comes down to how much the ingredient differences matter versus the convenience of local purchasing.
Kendamil follows NHS preparation guidelines which differ slightly from US formula preparation norms. Here is what matters for parents importing from the US.
Always use freshly boiled tap water cooled to at least 70 degrees C. The boiling process kills harmful bacteria that may be present in the water or in the formula powder. Bring at least one litre of fresh tap water to the boil, then leave to cool for no more than 30 minutes. Empty the kettle and refill with fresh water for each feed. Do not use repeatedly boiled water.
Tap water is the best choice. If you do not have access to safe tap water, bottled water can be used but must still be boiled and should be low in sodium and sulphates. Bottled water is not sterile. Do not use artificially softened water, which is not suitable as drinking water for infants.
The 70 degree preparation temperature is also why Kendamil does not add probiotics; any probiotic added to the formula would be destroyed during preparation. See the Pro-Comfort Baby Drops note above for a safe probiotic alternative.
Kendamil meets FDA nutrient requirements and has permanent FDA market access. All Stage 1 formulas contain at least 1 mg of iron per 100 kcal, within the FDA range and above the threshold requiring "additional iron may be necessary" labelling. Kendamil does not require iron supplementation when used as directed. Kendamil guarantees a minimum of 18 months shelf life on all orders, with most tins leaving the factory with 2 years remaining. Always check the Best Before Date on your tin.
Kendamil Organic Stage 1 scores 10/10 on our ingredient criteria. It is the only cow milk formula in our review to achieve a perfect score. Fresh whole milk from British organic farms, MFGM naturally preserved through mild heat processing, all five nucleotides found in breast milk, naturally occurring HMOs, GOS prebiotics from milk, algae-derived DHA with no fish oil, iron pyrophosphate, no palm oil, no soybean oil, EU organic and Soil Association certified, vegetarian certified, and Halal certified.
The one nuance worth knowing: Kendamil Organic contains organic skimmed milk alongside whole milk, used for mineral encapsulation during spray drying. This does not affect the fat profile or the MFGM content, which comes from the whole milk component. It is transparent about this and the explanation is scientifically sound.
